Students should be reading at least 25 minutes each day at home as part of their regular homework. They will also be required to do one book report each month on a book that is appropriate for their individual reading level. The book reports will have written and oral components. They will turn in a written summary and "sell the book" to their classmates in the oral report. This has been modeled for them in class.
It's important for students to read books at their appropriate reading level. An easy way to discover the current reading level is to simply choose a book and start reading. As you read a page, put up a finger each time you encounter a word you do not know. If you get 0 fingers, the book is too easy and will not help you grow in your ability. If you get 1-3 fingers, you've probably located a great book! If you get more than 3 fingers, make note of the book for future reference and return it to the shelf. The book is a little too difficult at this time and could create some frustration, crashing your motivation to read, but may be perfect for you later on.
